Funding

Book chapters

Since 1 October 2018, the SNSF has been financing book chapters that result from an SNSF-funded research project and are published in a peer-reviewed open access anthology.

During the ongoing transition period, coverage of publication fees can be requested as book chapter processing charges (BCPCs) via mySNF even if the book chapters are not published in an open access anthology. In such cases, the BCPCs are earmarked for the immediate open-access activation of the relevant book chapter.

OA publishing along the “green road” consists in the self-archiving of book chapters in an institutional or disciplinary repository no later than 12 months after their publication by a publisher.

Participation requirements

  • The book chapter must be published in a peer-reviewed anthology. The SNSF accepts the publisher’s peer-review decision.
  • Applications must be submitted by the grantees or the project staff and must refer to the funded project.
  • At least one of these persons must be mentioned as an author.
  • The support provided by the SNSF must be mentioned in the publication (a‪cknowledgement).
  • At least 50% of the research on which the publication is based was funded by the SNSF.

How To

  • Applications can be submitted via the OA platform (mySNF) at any time.
  • The SNSF prefers to pay costs directly to the publisher.
    • Along the application the publishers invoice is submitted.
    • After checking for eligibility the payment is made directly to the publisher.
  • There is also the option to have an already paid BCPC reimbursed from SNSF.
    • At the latest 6 months after the publication date.
    • Along the application the publishers invoice and a prove of payment is submitted.
    • After checking for eligibility the payment is made using the provided bank details.

Further information

  • If the participation requirements are met, the SNSF’s open-access publication funding is awarded independently of any ongoing grants, i.e. it can also be requested after the project has ended.
  • There is no upper limit for BCPCs for the time being. Unreasonable BCPCs may be cut by the SNSF.
